Whole home softening

What a Water Softener Does

A whole home water softener is installed where water enters your home. It removes the calcium and magnesium that make water hard, so every faucet, shower, appliance and water heater receives soft water.

Signs of hard water:

  • White, chalky scale on faucets, showerheads and fixtures
  • Spots and film on glassware, dishes and shower doors
  • Soap and shampoo that do not lather well
  • Skin and hair that feel dry after showering
  • Scale buildup inside water heaters, pipes and appliances

How a Water Softener Works

Hard water goes in, soft water comes out, and the system cleans itself automatically.

Diagram of how a water softener uses ion exchange and brine regeneration
Step 1

Ion Exchange

As hard water flows through the softener tank, resin beads capture the calcium and magnesium ions that cause hardness.

Step 2

Automatic Regeneration

Salt from the brine tank restores the resin on a set cycle, and the captured hardness minerals are flushed to the drain.

Step 3

Smart Control

A digital control head monitors water use and regenerates automatically, using salt efficiently.

What Changes With Soft Water

Less Scale

Fixtures, showerheads and appliances stay cleaner.

Protects Your Home

Reduces scale buildup in pipes, water heaters and appliances.

Cleaner Dishes

Fewer spots and less film on dishes and glassware.

Better Lather

Soap, shampoo and detergent work better with less product.

Softer Feel

Skin and hair feel softer after showering.

What a Water Softener Does Not Do

Some water problems need a different system. Your water test shows whether you need any of these.

Chlorine and Chloramine

A softener does not reduce chlorine, chloramine or chemicals. For that, add a whole home water filter.

Bottled Drinking Water

For the highest reduction of PFAS, fluoride and dissolved solids at the kitchen sink, add an under sink reverse osmosis system.

Bacteria

A softener does not disinfect water. A UV light add on does.

Sand, Silt and Rust

A sediment filter add on removes them before they reach the system.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a water softener the same as a water filter?

No. A softener removes the calcium and magnesium that cause hard water and scale. A filter reduces contaminants such as chlorine, chloramine and chemicals. Many DFW homes benefit from both. See whole home water filtration.

How hard is the water in DFW?

Hardness varies by city and water source. The U.S. Geological Survey classifies water above 120 mg/L of hardness as hard and above 180 mg/L as very hard. Your city lists its hardness in its annual water quality report, such as Dallas and Fort Worth. Your free water test measures your exact hardness.

Do I need to add salt?

Yes. The brine tank is refilled with softener salt as it runs low. How often depends on your water's hardness and how much water your household uses.

Why does soft water feel slippery?

Soap rinses off differently in soft water, so skin can feel smoother after a shower. This is normal.

Does a water softener add sodium to my water?

Ion exchange adds a small amount of sodium in place of the hardness minerals. The amount depends on how hard your water is. For drinking water with dissolved solids reduced, add an under sink reverse osmosis system.

Where is the softener installed?

Usually in the garage or near where the main water line enters the home, close to a drain and a power outlet.

How long does installation take?

Installation typically takes 3 to 6 hours. A bypass valve is included so the system can be serviced without shutting off your water.

Can I add a softener to a whole home filter?

Yes. Softeners pair with our whole home filtration systems. Bundles are listed on our Products page.

How much does a water softener cost?

Pricing and bundles are listed on our Products page. Financing options are available.

Is the warranty really lifetime?

Yes. Every system includes a 100% fully backed lifetime warranty, as long as annual maintenance is kept up.
